Description:
This species is a tall branching shape, commonly up to 1.5 meters tall in Indian Ocean reef slopes, though rarely this tall in the Red Sea. It is black or very dark green, a dark green colouration being left on fingers after touching the colony. Its habitat is generally the deeper reef slope, where it prefers clear water.
Corallites cup-like "turrets" borne on stout branches forming a tree-like structure. Colonies are azooxanthellate and grow up to 1 m in height.
